Energo-Pro Georgia, a company that distributes electricity in Georgia, discovered and stopped the supply of electricity to a mining farm in Mestia. The company stressed that due to the sharply increased energy consumption in the region, more than one miner may be disabled, Sputnik Georgia reports.
According to the mayor of the village of Kakhi Zhorzholiani, the authorities have already warned local residents about the illegality of mining cryptocurrencies without paying electricity bills.
“Energo-Pro Georgia detected up to two thousand miners, and all were placed in the same space. And after their shutdown, electricity consumption decreased by 2.5 megawatts, ” he said.
The company also noted that over the past six months, electricity consumption in the region has increased so much that the network often could not stand and the supply of electricity to the population was limited.
“The population of Mestia is exempt from paying for electricity, and businesses pay for the electricity consumed in accordance with the established tariff. The bitcoin farm we discovered was not registered as a business entity and, accordingly, it produced cryptocurrency mining for free, ” Energo-Pro Georgia said.
Mestia is included in the list of settlements in high-altitude regions that, according to the strategy of the government of Georgia, enjoy preferential tariffs for public services.
Recall that according to the IMF, Georgia ranks fourth in terms of bitcoin mining and mining accounts for a significant share of its economy.
